About Us

Our Vision and Mission

As a Christian church, our vision is “To help people meet with God and to rejoice in and express his love.”

From September 2010 to September 2011 we have been praying, consulting and discussing the vision God has for Crowthorne Methodist Church. In the summer we had a ‘Vision afternoon ’ during which the whole church prayed and discussed what they believed God wanted his church to achieve in the years to come. Out of that meeting fell our vision document which has given us direction and purpose over the next 5 years. Through this we believe God is calling us into new and exciting forms of ministry that will complement and enrich the ministries that are currently working well

In order to attain our vision we have established 4 objectives: Worship, Fellowship, Growth and Service. Each ministry aims to work towards achieving this vision.
Church Objectives:

To be a place where our love for God can be joyfully expressed together through heartfelt praise and worship.
• To be a place that responds to God’s grace with love, respect, compassion, and support.
• To be a place that helps people to grow in spiritual maturity
• To be a place where we live out the truth of the gospel by reaching out in love to our community and the world.

Some of our priorities for 2011/12 are:

• To enrich the prayer life of the church and individuals through our prayer chain.
• To celebrate and explore our relationship with God through a new pattern of All age worship services.
• To encourage and support our new “Pastoral and Family worker
• To build upon our existing ecumenical work with young people by equipping these projects with volunteers and financial support.

Please continue praying for our vision, that God will guide and equip us to achieve these objectives that will enrich the mission and life of our church.

Church History

The village of Crowthorne began as part of the parish of Sandhurst, and became an ecclesiastical parish in 1874.

Wellington College opened in 1859, Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum in 1863, and the Church of England school in 1875.

The first evidence of methodism in Crowthorne was in 1869, when the present church site was bought for the princely sum of £5, by a Wesleyan minister from Aldershot.

The first building that was erected on the site was officially opened on Good Friday, 15th April, 1870, at a cost of £173-11-2d.

The present church was built in 1898 and opened on 21st September of that year. Records show that the cost was £1,500. The organ was built and installed in 1913. Originaly blown by hand pump, the electric blower was fitted in 1943.

The onward march of progress brought electricity for lighting in 1928, replacing oil lamps, oil-fired central heating in 1962 replacing a coke-burning boiler, and until recently the 10:30 a.m. Concorde departure punctuated the sermon on a Sunday morning. That’s progress!

Most of this information was taken from two books produced by Aubrey Vaughan – “Crowthorne Methodist Church – A History (1869-1988)”, and “Crowthorne Methodist Church – a Centenary Chronicle”. Thanks to Aubrey for his historical research.
